Dehradun, the capital city of the Uttarakhand is famous for its lush green surroundings, exotic landscape and charming life.

 

Nestled at the foothills of the Himalayan range, it is 35kilometres away from the beautiful hill station of Mussoorie. Dehradun is the gateway to other popular destination of the Himalaya like Rishikesh, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

The Auli ski resort attracts enthusiasts from across the country and the globe. This resort offers skiing facilities like cable car, Ski lift, chair lift and snow- beaters.

The office of the Survey of India, built in 1767 is associated with the remarkable achievement of determining the height of Mount Everest in the Himalayan range under the guidance of the Surveyor General -Sir George Everest.

 

For his notable work, the peak was named after him.

 

The office is located few kilometres from the heart of the city.


Forest Research Institute is yet another famous tourist attractions in Dehradun. The British constructed it in 1906 in the northwest of Dehradun city. It’s objective is to preserve the rich flora and fauna of India.

 

With Mussorie ridge as the backdrop, the institute spread over extensive grounds, housing six museums, open for public viewing on weekends.


Other attractions in Dehradun India include Kalinga War Memorial, Gurkha Fort, Mindrolling Monastery (Tibetan monastery), Chetwoode Hall (museum displaying 20th century military artefacts), Clock Tower (built by the British, and continues to be the icon of the downtown area), Ram Rai Darbar (Sikh pilgrimage destination), Tapovan (a holy place where the reverent teacher of the Kauravas and Pandavas, Guru Dronacharya had done penance here) and Jaspal Rana shooting range.

National parks are the favourite tourist attractions in Dehradun along with temples. The Malsi Deer Park set at the foothills of the Shivalik range, few kilometres from Dehradun, is home to deer, neelgai and striking flocks of birds including migratory.

 

It is an enjoyable picnic spot as well, for both locals and tourists. The mini-zoo in tandem with the captivating park proves to be a perfect relaxation spot for everyone.

 


Tapkeshwar Temple, located 6 kilometres from the city, is a famous cave temple, flanking a seasonal river, dedicated to the Indian god Shiva. A massive fair is held during the festival of Shivratri, attracting devotes from across the country.
